Why Speaking Out?
Many of us feel very passionately about issues and topics that we are trying to leverage within our organisations. We want to speak out and yet hesitate to do so. Or we do speak out and in so doing know that delivered differently we could have done much better. There is a great need for more of us to step to the line and take the opportunities that come our way by adding our voice and influencing issues close to our hearts. Speaking clearly, at a volume that allows our words to be heard, at a pitch that allows our words to carry, with both feeling and thinking functions activated and aligned, managing our fear, and bringing ourselves powerfully and authentically to our audience, is possible, desirable, unusual, and hugely satisfying. For everyone. The Speaking Out programme begins with an enquiry into the platform we stand upon - values, beliefs, and assumptions. We explore the source of our passion to communicate, and locate an internal 'centre' from which we can speak with confidence, authenticity, and calm.
This Speaking Out programme is designed for people in business who would like to grow their competence and confidence in speaking to audiences on topics that have the potential to positively contribute to a more humane, just, and sustainable world.
Do you recognise yourself ?
Cast your eye down this list. If you recognise yourself in what we've written, or have your own version of something similar, why not come to the edge of the known world and find your Voice.
- you are tasked to launch a project close to your heart. You will need to address a group of 2 - 1000 people. You have one shot to inspire them to get involved
- you contribute to many projects and endeavours and yet keep getting the feeling that you have not done full justice to your ideas you have knowledge and expertise in an area much in demand, but your competence and confidence in expressing what you know is less than it needs to be to achieve the outcomes you desire
- you are inspired, passionate, and committed, but when you speak you sound (or think you sound) fanatical, hysterical, and dogmatic
- you are inspired, passionate, and committed, but when you speak you sound (or think you sound) bored, dull, and stuck
- you have a circle of colleagues you'd love to connect to ideas around leadership / sustainability / engagement but when you speak of these things you lose confidence and coherence
- when you lie in the bath you address thousands with fluency and brilliance. When dressed and upright before a handful of colleagues you quail, shake, and mumble
Getting to the Heart of the Matter
All the challenges most people experience when speaking out have their roots in complex issues connected to our self esteem. Speaking Out approaches this delicate territory sensitively. Alongside the straightforward aim of bringing you lucid, fluent, and empowered to situations where it is important that your voice is heard, this programme also attempts to go some way towards resolving underlying issues that inhibit full and free expression. Speaking Out explores both below and above the water line. Deep intention, self esteem, and authenticity are woven together with practical skills, helpful techniques, and information. Working in this way allows us to de-mystify this most feared and valued human attribute.
Testimonials
“I came to build my confidence in speaking, to be more compelling. I went from feeling like a fish out of water to feeling inspired by the place and the people. I was inspired by how direct and searching the feedback was. There is something very ‘stripped back’ about the environment which meant I could tune in to what I need to change. Not a comfortable experience, but a great one. I rate the Embercombe team 10/10 for the delivery of the course."
Laura Haviland, Associated Britsh Foods, participant March 2012
"...so much about us can be seen when we present - we have to be prepared to look at ourselves to improve these skills. It was challenging but extremely useful to me." Lucie Hartley, CEO of EDP Drug and Alcohol Services, participant Nov 2012
"It was great fun with beautiful food. I feel lucky to have been on the course." Jennie Bell, Pepsico, participant Nov 2012
"I feel better armed to change myself and the world." Sam Stone, participant Nov 2012
