Courageous Conversations
The poet David Whyte coined the phrase ‘courageous conversations’ as he explored the world of work and meaning in many talks, poems, and several books. At Embercombe we like this phrase and the invitation it offers us to probe coeur-rageously (in a heartfelt manner) issues that in some way or other have the potential to lead us towards or away from the world of our choosing. Topics that are considered challenging, crucial, and pivotal, are brought forward by one of our people and a gathering is then convened to explore and share our understanding. We plan to extend these ‘conversation days’ with a series of Courageous Conversations that will bring together leaders from business, education, academia, social enterprises, NGO’s, politics, and the public sector. The purpose of these symposiums would be:
- To identify unconscious assumptions that deny us the opportunity to be truly creative and responsive.
- To deepen our understanding and appreciation of difference, diversity, and culture.
- To develop and model collaborative enquiry processes that enquire into controversial and emotive topics.
- To strengthen and support the hope that we can come together, bring our different beliefs, our different experiences and backgrounds, our different priorities, and still seek, find, and resolve difficult and challenging issues.
-
To probe and enquire into how business and organisations might better serve the needs of ALL stakeholders and define a purpose more fitting for the 21st century.
