Bringing science to life

This programme takes children on an exciting, hands on journey through many scientific processes. Embercombe provides the natural environment, ingredients and equipment for a wide range of experiments to be conducted.

Whether its a single day for a specific pulleys and levers experiment or a multiday residential that involves building a lime kiln and making paints from the products, our team will design a programme that embeds learning for all your children.

  • Making charcoal enables a detailed exploration of the carbon cycle, from collecting feedstock for the burners to using the end product for cooking.
  • Building a lime kiln from cob and making lime wash, culminating in a painting project.
  • Creating zip wires and hauling logs in the woods, practical applications of principles learnt in physics.
  • Sourcing materials from the land and creating soap or paper, chemistry in practice plus beautiful finished products to take home.

Embercombe's diverse habitats with their wide range of flora and fauna, provide many opportunities for ecological surveys and wildlife studies. The abundant Embercombe garden and small number of livestock also add to a rich resource for teachers and students alike.
