OLD For Primary Schools

Come and experience our Outdoor Classroom - the sky is the limit!

Embercombe is the ultimate “Outdoor Classroom”. An amazing place for children to learn new skills, old skills, stretch their imaginations and to do some very practical work whilst having all sorts of fun in the great outdoors. We know how hard it can be to leave the classroom and bring children out – so hopefully we’ve made it easy.

We have 50 acres of abundant wildlife habitats, organic gardens, deciduous woodland and farm land which provide the perfect, rich environment for your class to come and learn in. Our teaching staff are fully qualified, confident and experienced at providing the perfect outdoor education experience for primary school children – and their teachers.

The hands on activities have been designed to compliment the National Curriculum, in particular the Sciences and the Arts and, depending on the season, the weather and the needs of the farm, gardens and woodland.

There's plenty to do!

Preparing and planting the vegetable garden; harvesting fruit and vegetables; charcoal making and drawing; building woodland shelters; woodland management; compost making; making fires; cooking outdoors; map making; animal care; exploring habitats; bush craft; apple pressing; green woodworking; basketry; pottery; building earth ovens; bread baking; felt making; storytelling and singing

We can tailor activities to suit the needs of your class so please call us to discuss. We’re here to help make your day out rewarding and beneficial.

Awe and Wonder – Day visit

Focused around food and its journey from seed to table, the children gather and cut firewood from our woodlands, build a fire, harvest vegetables from the farm and then prepare and cook a tasty and satisfying meal together. A discovery of where food really comes from.

Stone Soup – Day visit

Stone Soup -  an action packed day of  exploring the garden collecting ingredients for the one and only Stone Soup. Together with real life characters the children play out the theatrical performance of Stone Soup around a roaring fire on which the
soup is cooked. A magical learning experience for all.

Wild Pizza – Day Visit

Wild Pizza – how to make a really wild pizza! The children gather the ingredients, grind the grain, make the dough, collect the firewood, build the fire, make the base, cover it with toppings, cook them in our outdoor pizza ovens ….then they finally get to eat them. A great way to discover what goes into a pizza!

Wildcraft - Day visit or Residential

A really wild experience encouraging children to develop a relationship with the natural environment. The activities are specially designed to encourage children to recognise their own strengths and talents.  Foraging for food, hunting and stalking, making fire, cooking outdoors, building woodland shelters and sleeping in them.

Schools Outreach

We can come to your school and help you develop your outdoor learning environment and advise on developing your school grounds as an educational resource. Create a permanent edible garden in your grounds; build a pizza oven for the school; teach crafts – felting, basketry, or woodworking; build a sculpture with the children in your school grounds
