Embercombe Country Fair Come and be inspired by a truly traditional Country Fair at Embercombe, Higher Ashton on Saturday 6th June 2009 from 10am until 4 pm. Free Entry. You can explore our 20 acres of mature broadleaf woodlands which, thanks to Breathing Places, Forestry Education Initiative, Dartmoor National Park and Forestry Commission grants, we have restored and coppiced over the last year allowing the abundant wildlife to flourish. Wander along our informative and beautiful nature trails and check out the moths (captured the night before) and butterflies (the rare pearl-bordered and small pearl-bordered fritillary butterfly have been spotted in this ideal habitat) – so get hold of an information leaflet and get looking! The trail will take you through five natural habitats, past charcoal burners and a mobile sawmill. There will be woodland craft activities for all: have a go at green woodworking; try your hand at besom broom-making and take home your personally-crafted work to sweep the path; learn how to make gate hurdles, oak pegs, wattle-hurdles and shingles or have a go at pole lathing. Take a horse and cart ride, or wander at your leisure, around our beautiful 50 acre valley site and see our working horses, the sheep, with local felt workers offering a chance to learn this ancient art or visit the pond to spot bug life and join the willow weavers in the craft of basket making. Follow the smell of the forge to see the blacksmith at work and to learn how to craft metal from the fire. You can learn how to build bat and bird boxes for different species and help us erect them in the right places, then make one for yourself. Adopt a tree, mulch it and come back to look after it again. Embercombe has inspired hundred of volunteers, local, national and international, to give their time to looking after this magical Breathing Place ( this is a chance to join us if you wish). Look for the craft market where local food producers and craft workers will display their wares for sale. Running all day will be traditional country games such as egg and spoon, slippery pole, tug of war and sack races for all ages. Sit down and relax as live music wafts on the wind at the main café. You may win a prize in the big green Raffle such as a trip down the River Dart with 10 of your friends in a canoe or a luxury £100 organic food hamper! Free entry, free bus from local villages or Car Park £5. FIND US! Get directions here Accessibility: please be aware that this is a hilly site, with rough tarmac tracks and grassland. We have wheelchair access toilet and yurt facilities. Supported by Big Lottery Fund’s Breathing Places programme, the Dartmoor National Park and the Forest Education Initiative.
Embercombe runs a wide variety of courses, mainly residential in yurt villages, for businesses, schools, local people, volunteers, special needs groups, disadvantaged and homeless young people, university and college students, families and other community and corporate groups. Our aim is to touch hearts, stimulate minds and inspire committed action for a truly sustainable world. The programmes we run connect people back into nature and the land through skill-sharing activities such as green woodworking or working the farm and through personal development with highly-skilled facilitators and mentors. We all learn through hands-on experience, so this huge outdoor classroom boosts self-esteem and well-being and brings out qualities of leadership in a proven way as well as nurturing a deep quality of connectedness with the natural world. It is particularly beneficial to those who are struggling to find meaning or momentum for whatever reason. We have a base of over 350 volunteers who help to keep Embercombe running and a full programme of events throughout the year.
